Two Vietnamese container ports named among world's Top 20

06/15/2026 15:35

The Cai Mep Port Cluster in Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province and Hai Phong Port have been ranked among the world's top-performing container ports in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025.

The CPPI, jointly developed by the World Bank Group and S&P Global Market Intelligence, provides a comparable and data-driven assessment of container port performance worldwide.

The Cai Mep Port Cluster ranked 11th, while Hai Phong Port placed 13th. This marks the second consecutive year that Vietnamese seaports have maintained high rankings in the CPPI.

According to statistics from the Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority, cargo throughput at Hai Phong's seaport system reached more than 50 million tons in the first five months of this year, up 8 percent year-on-year. Container throughput exceeded 36.9 million TEUs, also marking an 8 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Vessel traffic through the port system continued to grow steadily. During the January–May period, a total of 17,162 vessel calls were recorded at Hai Phong's seaports, up 5 percent from the same period in 2025. Of these, 7,493 were ocean-going vessel calls, representing a 2 percent increase.

According to the Viet Nam Maritime and Inland Waterways Administration, total cargo throughput through the country's seaport and inland waterway port system was estimated at more than 546 million tons in the first five months of the year, up 15 percent year-on-year. Container throughput reached over 15 million TEUs, an increase of 14 percent compared to the same period last year.

The CPPI has become an established benchmark for comparing port efficiency across locations, regions, and income groups, as well as for tracking performance over time. The index measures the length of time container ships spend in port, capturing the combined effects of nautical access, berth availability, cargo-handling productivity, yard operations, and coordination among stakeholders.

By relying on actual vessel-call data rather than self-reported indicators, the CPPI reflects how ports operate within real-world global shipping networks and provides a consistent basis for benchmarking performance./
